This is a small memorial site run by Joe Harwig’s family. We collect as little as we can. This page explains what the site records and what we do with it.

When you send us a note

The form at the bottom of the home page stores:

  • the message you wrote;
  • your email address, only if you chose to enter one. It’s optional, and we use it only to reply to you;
  • the page you were on, and the date and time you sent it.

We read your note, and we may reply. It is emailed, with your email address and the page if you gave them, to the family members who run the site, using Amazon’s email service. We don’t sell it, share it or use it for anything else. It’s kept until we delete it.

To limit spam, the site also keeps a short-lived counter of submissions per sender. It is tied to a scrambled code made from your IP address, a secret and the date. The code can’t be turned back into your address, differs from one day to the next, and is deleted within a couple of days. Your address itself is not stored with your note.

When you visit

We count visits with our own simple analytics, which sets no cookies and doesn’t follow you around the web. For each page view it records:

  • the page and the site you came from, if any;
  • your country, and your device, browser and operating system type;
  • a scrambled daily code made from your IP address and browser details. It exists only to count distinct visitors within a single day and can’t identify you; your IP address is not stored;
  • when you play the video, and when you send a note (the fact that you did, never what you wrote).

These statistics are seen only by the family members who run the site.

Our hosting

The site is served from Amazon Web Services in the United States. Like any web server, it keeps access logs of each request, including your IP address and browser details, for 90 days, for security and troubleshooting. If you choose higher video quality, the video streams from Cloudflare, which receives your IP address to deliver it. We don’t use advertising or social media trackers, and the site loads no third-party scripts.

Your choices

You can ask us what we hold from your note, or ask us to delete it, by emailing contact@joe-harwig.info. Tell us roughly when you wrote it and the email address you used, if any, so we can find it. Deleted notes can remain in encrypted backups for up to 35 days.
