In Loving Memory of
Joe Harwig
1958 — 1979
Shakey Lakes Park Stephenson, MI

Joe Harwig was a beloved son, brother, and friend. He passed away at the age of 21 in a tragic apartment fire, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, and unforgettable memories.

Joseph Harwig loved the Shakey Lakes part of the Upper Peninsula so much...that this was the only setting for this memorial.

Joe was the youngest of four brothers—Jay, John, Jeff, and Joe—and he shared a special bond with each of them. He grew up loving the outdoors, especially the time spent at the family cabin on Long Lake. There, he could often be found skiing across the water, smiling ear to ear, surrounded by the people he loved most.

To honor Joe's life and spirit, the Harwig family donated this flagpole to Shakey Lakes Park, a place filled with cherished family memories. The park has graciously agreed to maintain the flagpole, which now stands as a tribute to Joe's memory and the joy he brought to those around him.

Whenever you see the flag flying here, we hope you'll think of Joe—his energy, his smile, and his love for the water and the north woods.
